Southern Nevada's outlying towns - Mesquite
, Laughlin, Primm, and Pahrump - offer many golf enticements. For instance, golfers teeing up in Mesquite, 80 miles northeast of
Las Vegas
, find high-quality links and scenery.
"We think of Mesquite
as a great value destination for golfers," says Gary Moore, head pro at CasaBlanca Golf Club. "There are numerous packages you can create, and you don't have the big-city congestion to deal with. We have six golf courses within 10 minutes of each other, and there's gaming, too." Mesquite courses and hotels like the
CasaBlanca
and Oasis offer golf packages that begin at $120.
"We have such a variety of championship courses, ranging from hills and canyons to more traditional," Moore
says. "Our course,
CasaBlanca
, is traditional-style and goes through the wetlands. It's playable, but if you play from the back tees, it's tough. Others like
Wolf
Creek
and Oasis have a lot of elevated tees and canyons - it's spot-on golf. We also have the Palms, Falcon Ridge, and the new Canyons at Oasis. So you have great variety."
Laughlin has a similar contrast in layouts. The Mojave is links-style while the new Laughlin Ranch across the river in Bullhead
City
has striking elevation changes.
In Primm, the names of the two Primm
Valley
courses indicate their contrast: the Lakes and the Desert. Both were designed by well-known architect Tom Fazio.
Pahrump has two 18-hole layouts, Willow Creek and Mountain
Falls
. Both have rolling terrain.
Resorts in each town serve as destinations for golf-minded guests. They also offer an escape hatch for Las Vegas
visitors and residents. As Moore says, "We get a lot of people from Vegas, and they tell us that
Mesquite
is their getaway."
David Moore rediscovered his game three years ago at the Mojave Resort Golf Club in Laughlin.
